Accidents happen everywhere. Even in your home.
And for the most part, these mishaps occur when you least expect them to.
But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to prepare against these unfortunate events. By having medical supplies in your medicine cabinet, you will be able to easily tend to minor ailments and secure the safety of your family.
Here are a couple of basic items you will need:
- Bandages
Gauze bandages have a lot of practical uses. You can make use of them to secure a cotton pad with antibiotic ointment in place. You can also use bandages to stop a bleeding wound or as a substitute for elastic bandages when wrapping strains, sprains, and other mild injuries (in case the proper material is not available at the moment).
- Digital Thermometer
Thermometers might have a simple function, but they are an important medical tool you should have at home. You can use it to check for your loved one’s temperature in case they have a fever (and to see whether home treatment is working or if you will be taking them to the doctor or hospital).
- Adhesive Tape
Used on par with bandages, an adhesive tape keeps bandages in place. Not only do they maintain the security of the wound, but they also provide a breathable cover which makes it more comfortable for the patient.
- Antibiotic Cream
Cuts, scrapes, nicks… everyone gets some of these every once and a while. Although these injuries may be tiny, they still serve as a possible entry point for harmful organisms and could get infected. To avoid that, all you need to do is keep the wound clean and swipe an antibiotic cream on it. Check in with your local pharmacist to know which ointment is best suited for you.
- Topical Antiseptic
Minor cuts and wounds may sometimes contain debris that could lead to an infection. Thankfully, you can effectively wash those away with the help of cool water, mild soap, and topical antiseptics. If you’re unsure which topical antiseptic to use, it would be best to stay away from disinfectants that could cause a harsh burning sensation such as alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Instead, try a povidone-iodine solution for a much gentler cleanser.
So far, how many of these items do you have at the moment? Apart from these medical supplies, it’s important that you also have a stock of OTC medications that will help you treat minor discomforts right at home.
